In Chatsworth, CA, just north of Los Angeles, Spahn Movie Ranch was a 55-acre filming location for a number of TV Westerns, including Bonanza and The Lone Ranger, but it was better known as the residence of Charles Manson and his followers, the "Manson Family", for much of 1968 and 1969. Owner George Spahn allowed out-of-work stuntmen and ranch hands to live on the property in return for labor, and when Manson arrived, Spahn was almost 80 years old, lonely, and nearly blind. In return for a place to live, the family, especially Manson’s girls, would help take care of Spahn’s needs, a task assigned to Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme. The ranch became Manson’s kingdom, and he indoctrinated his followers with LSD, orgies, and lectures outlining “Helter Skelter,” the race war he was determined to start.
A wildfire destroyed all of the film sets in 1970. and Spahn died in1974. The Spahn Movie Ranch site is now part of California's Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, with only the “Manson Cave” remaining. 34.272165, -118.615798
