'Salty' means coarse, provocative, earthy, and is often said of language; 'salty' language is riddled with profanity. It can also mean experienced, especially used to indicate a veteran of the naval services. A Salty Dog is likewise a seasoned sailor, or a vodka & grapefruit with a salted rim. It's better to order a Salty Dog, as it sounds cooler than 'a Greyhound'.
