The Salton Sea was a booming desert resort town in the 1950s and 60s that turned into an ecological nightmare shortly after. It was created accidentally in 1905 when the Colorado River swelled, and flooded into the Salton Sink desert valley. The ‘miracle in the desert’ thrived, attracting the Hollywood elite, like nearby Palm Springs. By the 70s, with no rainfall, drainage, and pesticide runoff from nearby farms, salt levels increased, depleting oxygen levels in the water. Thousands of fish died annually and washed onto the shore where they shriveled up and decayed in the extreme heat, where they currently remain. 33.346543, -115.841300
