The Chasm of Doom is located in the Hidden Valley Picnic Area of Joshua Tree National Park. It's a tight scramble, with steep climbs, steeper drops, chimneying, and death-defying squeezes through a dark maze of granite boulders. One section, known as The Coffin (aka the Birthing Canal) is particularly nightmarish for the claustrophobic. The journey is even better at night, but entrance can be difficult to find, even if you have an experienced guide, and especially if that guide is on mushrooms.
